thick wave

The Nursing Home Association of Prince Edward Island (NHAPEI) oversees the delivery of publicly subsidized nursing care through its member organizations, which include both not-for-profit and private nursing homes across PEI. As the leading entity in this sector, NHAPEI proudly represents six dedicated organizations operating ten licensed long-term care centers throughout the province.

These private nursing homes and non-profit facilities, licensed by the Community Care Facilities/Nursing Home Board, provide essential, round-the-clock nursing care services to residents in need of compassionate support.

With a workforce of over 750 skilled health care professionals, NHAPEI ensures that each resident receives high-quality, personalized care tailored to their unique needs. Our licensed beds make up 100% of all non-government nursing care beds in PEI, reflecting our unwavering commitment to serving the province’s seniors and meeting the growing demand for long-term care.

Vision

A health system in which quality, safe and comfortable long-term care is available to all in need.

Mission

To support our members to provide safe, high quality of life to all seniors accessing nursing care in PEI.

Services

white

NHAPEI represents private nursing homes that provide essential health care and support services to residents across PEI, ensuring the highest quality of care. While funding for these services comes from multiple sources, every dollar is dedicated to the well-being of the individual.

As residents transition through different stages of care, the funding follows them, ensuring continuity and consistency. Private nursing homes are proud partners in the provincial health care system, contributing to the health and support of Islanders.

NHAPEI remains deeply committed to empowering its members to deliver resident-centered care, ensuring Islanders receive the support they need when living at home is no longer an option.

Guiding Principles

We treat others as we would like to be treated and believe in maintaining a welcoming and caring environment for residents, family and staff.

We value a safe, supporting and compassionate workplace.

For residents, we believe in respecting individual choices and the right to exercise control over decisions and daily routines.

For staff, we respect a working environment that places decision making closest to the resident and values suggestions and individual initiative.

We value our association with the Government of PEI and each private nursing home on PEI ask for equal treatment from the government.

We believe in strong public and private nursing care partnerships and that by working as a team we will maintain a consistent and equitable high standard of quality of care and quality of life for our residents.

We support accountability for services provided.

We support fair and adequate reimbursement for operating and capital costs to help promote the stability, adequacy and quality of licensed nursing care services.

The accommodations portion of the per diem paid to private nursing homes must be covered by the resident or provincial government in all cases.

We seek efficiencies that will allow the NHAPEI members to operate sustainable, affordable and innovative nursing homes.

Innovations importance is growing and should be encouraged and supported in the nursing care sector.

FAQ

After you contact Home Care, a Care Coordinator will meet with you to assess your care needs. Depending on your situation, other professionals may also need to meet with you and your family to better understand your personal circumstances.

Home Care Office Contact Information:

  • Charlottetown: (902) 368-4790
  • Montague: (902) 838-0786
  • O’Leary: (902) 859-8730
  • Souris: (902) 687-7096
  • Summerside: (902) 888-8440

Everyone’s situation is unique. Some people enter long-term care because:

  • They may require more care than Home Care can provide.
  • Family member(s) can no longer meet their care needs.
  • Their health care needs have increased, requiring additional services such as daily nursing care.

Yes, you can choose your preferred nursing home, provided it meets your specific care needs. Your Care Coordinator will discuss nursing home options with you and your family. You may request to be placed on the waitlist for up to three different facilities.

Each of your choices is given equal priority when we offer you an opportunity to move into a nursing home, so it’s important to choose only the homes where you truly wish to live. Once you've submitted your list of preferred facilities, your name will be placed on the waitlist according to the date you were approved for long-term care.

When choosing a nursing home, make sure to select only homes where you are sure you want to live. You or a family member might consider visiting homes before making a decision. Keep these points in mind when choosing:

  • Is the location convenient for friends and family to visit?
  • Does the home offer activities and services that you enjoy?
  • Does the home provide the type of accommodation you prefer at a price you can afford?

The cost of long-term care is shared between you (the resident) and the provincial government. You are responsible for accommodation costs and personal expenses, while Health PEI covers your health care costs. The Department of Health and Wellness sets standard accommodation charges each year.

If you can pay the standard accommodation charge, there is no need to complete a financial assessment. However, if you cannot afford the standard charge, you can apply for a reduced rate through an income-based financial assessment.

  • The daily accommodation cost for public manors and subsidized residents in private care homes is $114.67 per day.
  • Other rates may apply in private homes, depending on the type of room and your ability to pay.

If your net annual income is less than $43,414.55, you may qualify for a government subsidy to help cover accommodation costs. For more information, contact the Long-term Care Subsidization Program at (902) 368-6130.

Private nursing homes may have different rates for accommodation, unless you qualify for a government subsidy.
